Alumni Weekend 2009
June 13, 2009
MANSFIELD, PA—More than 450 alumni, family and friends returned to Mansfield University for Alumni Weekend
2009, June 12-13.
The Class of 1959, celebrating its 50th anniversary, was this year’s honored guests for alumni weekend. Sixty members of the class returned to MU and were recognized at a luncheon on Saturday. The Class of ’59 endowed a scholarship fund as a special gift to the University.
Also honored at the luncheon were this year’s Society of Honors award winners. Air Force Brigadier General Francis Hendricks ’79 received the Alumni Citation Award. Karen Starner Jacobson ’69 ’86 was presented with the Elsie Burke Service Award. Robert Christie ’92 was named this year’s Outstanding Young Alumni. The Distinguished Educator Award was presented to Randy Roberts ’72.
“Leadership at Mansfield is about service,” President Maravene Loeschke told the luncheon gathering. “That is what you have done with your lives. That is what we are asking our students to do with their lives. They’re using you as role models. My pledge to you is that service, character, scholarship, culture and ethics are a part of what happens to a Mansfield student, just as it was for you. ”
The weekend included a special celebration of the history of home economics at Mansfield. Graduates and faculty from the Home Economics, Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles and Food Services programs returned for a series of special presentations and a tea hosted by President Loeschke.
The weekend also featured several social events--offering opportunities to renew acquaintances and make news ones, as well as tours of campus, a “Show and Tell” program, with alumni invited to showcase their talents and interests, a mixer for alumni of Greek organizations and an alumni golf tournament at Corey Creek Golf Club.
