MANSFIELD, PA— People are climbing the wall at Mansfield University, and having fun doing it.
The campus community gathered on Tuesday, April 10 to officially dedicate the climbing wall, the newest addition to the Kelchner Fitness Center (KFC), with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The new structure is 80 feet wide, 29 feet tall and dominates the south end of the KFC Gymnasium. It offers a wide variety of challenging courses for rock climbing enthusiasts, as well as courses for beginners to learn on.
The $150,000 project was built with funding from the Student Government Association (SGA).
“It allows us to diversify the offerings we have here at the Kelchner Fitness Center,” SGA President Thomas Thornton said. “It can also serve as a recruitment tool to attract new students. It’s a great opportunity all around for students, administration and staff. I think it’s a great thing.”
“It showcases us as a major university with exceptional facilities,” James Parker, vice president for Student Affairs, said. “You just hear the excitement from the students when they talk about this being something that I want to be a part of. I think it’s going to be a wonderful addition to our campus.”
“This gives the students more options for fitness and helps students find lifetime activities for recreation,” Amy DeLozier, director of
the Kelchner Fitness Center, said. “Students see the wall as a challenge and just want to get to the top, but once they do that they see the potential in climbing again and gaining skills and knowledge. So instead of being just a challenge it becomes a new activity that they become passionate about. One of our goals at the Kelchner Fitness Center is giving students as many activities as we can so they can find the activities that will sustain them for life.”
In addition to the campus community, the climbing wall is available to community members with the purchase of a day pass and to and groups for a fee. Use of the wall is also included in yearly memberships. Harnesses, shoes and helmets are available for rent.
