MANSFIELD, PA—More than 300 alumni, family and friends returned to Mansfield University for Alumni Weekend 2012 on June 8-9.
The Class of 1962, celebrating its 50th anniversary, was this year’s honored guests for alumni weekend. Forty one members of the class returned to MU and were recognized, along with all classes with years ending in two and seven, retired faculty, administrators and staff. The Class of ’62 endowed a scholarship fund as a special gift to the University.
Also honored at the luncheon were this year’s Society of Honors award winners. David M. Wennergren '80 received the Alumni Citation Award. Carol Himmelreich Brann '60 was presented with the Elsie Burke Service Award. Larry M. Hake '87, M '96 was named this year’s Outstanding Young Alumni. The Distinguished Educator Award was presented to James Ploskonka '83.
“It has been wonderful meeting so many of you over the last day and a half,” interim President Allan Golden told the luncheon gathering. “I’ve been in the PASSHE system for over 30 years and have not had the pleasure of spending such quality time with alumni. You are the backbone of our institution. You give us history, memories, and a sense of pride that no one else can provide. I am glad to have had the opportunity to be part of alumni weekend as your interim president.”
After recounting several of the improvements and projects that are, or soon will be, taking place on campus, Golden concluded by saying, “MU is alive and well; it’s active; it’s growing; and hopefully it’s an institution that you are proud to call your alma mater.”
The weekend also featured tours of campus, a mixer for alumni of Greek organizations, an alumni golf tournament at Corey Creek Golf Club, which serves as a fundraiser for athletic scholarships, and other several social events--offering opportunities to renew acquaintances and make news ones.
