Fabulous 1890s Weekend Set For September 28-29

MANSFIELD, PA—The popular and the new will highlight this year’s Fabulous 1890s Weekend on September 28-29 in Smythe Park, Mansfield.

The Weekend celebrates the world’s first night football game played on September 28, 1892 in Smythe Park.

“This year we’ll be celebrating, almost to the day, the 120th anniversary of the first night game,” Dennis Miller, co-chair of the event, said

The Weekend will open Friday and feature high school girls soccer, Mansfield girls against Sayre at 6:30 p.m.

Musical entertainment will also start at 6:30 p.m. with Nashville singer Angela Hesse performing in the pavilion.

The Minnesota native left the farm to pursue a degree in music and a dream of becoming a star. While she was influenced by Shania Twain, she describes her music as “a cross between Kelly Clarkson and Miranda Lambert with a twist of Angie.” Her debut album is titled BitterSweet.

Following Hesse will be square dancing by the Cowanesque Valley Boys at 8 p.m.

The Prism Concert will be held in Steadman Theatre on the Mansfield University campus at 8 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Saturday.

On Saturday, the 1890s Parade will make its way up Main St. at 11 a.m.

The first annual Pet Fashion Show, sponsored by the Animal Care Sanctuary in Wellsboro, will be held at 12:30 in the pavilion. “We’re hoping for a lot of participation,” Miller said. “It should be a lot of fun and very photogenic.”

The East West Karate Club will demonstrate their skills at 12:30 p.m. and the MU Boxing club will demonstrate 19th century boxing at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in Smythe Park.

At 1 p.m., the MU football team will play Army on the Karl Van Norman Field.

Miller said the committee has added entertainment that will appeal to people of all ages. Phydeaux’s Flying Fleas and Wahoo Medicine Show makes its first appearance at the Weekend and the Country Kids Jamboree, which includes puppet shows and children’s games, also makes its debut at this year’s celebration.

Other acts include a return by popular demand of Irish musician Pat Kane, who will do a two-hour show at 12:30 p.m. in the main tent, followed by Djug Django, which performs songs from the swing era to classics from South America, originals, and Django Reinhardt songs.

Rounding out the entertainment are Folk Spirits, a folk and easy listening group, and the Cherry Flats Ridge Pluckers, who will perform a concert then provide the music for contra dancing, in the pavilion.

The Mansfield and Sayre HS boys soccer teams will square off at 6:30 p.m., followed by the re-enactment of the world’s first night football game.

The Weekend will be capped off by a spectacular fireworks show with musical accompaniment provided by “The Spirit & The Pride of Pennsylvania” MU Marching Band.

Admission to the Smythe Park grounds is a $3 button, which is good for the entire weekend.
