Gallery Exhibit Goes "Beyond the Obvious"
October 21, 2009
MANSFIELD, PA- “Beyond the Obvious,” a collection of works by the Photo Keller Group, will be on display at the Mansfield University Gallery beginning Thursday, October 29. The exhibit will run through December 8.
Founded by Wolfram Jobst in January 2004, the group has been meeting in a comfortable family style room in his cellar and adopted the German word for cellar for their own. “It is a creative group of eight photographers devoted to visual expression at its best,” Jobst said.
Photo Keller Group consists of Jobst, a retired DuPont Co. chemical engineer from Richmond Township; Ken Meyer, retired Mansfield University biology professor; Sam and Nancy McCaughey, retired art educators from the Canton School
District; Bruce Dart, award winning professional photographer and owner/operator of Photos by Dart in Mansfield; Tina Tollins, retired family physician from Wellsboro; Ann Kamzelski, retired analytical chemist from Wellsboro; and Mia Lisa Anderson, administrative assistant at Houghtaling’s Garage in Middlebury Center who also does graphic design work for Wordsworth Communications in Wellsboro.
“Beyond the Obvious” is the group’s first photo exhibit and the culmination of five years of experimentation and work. Members of the eight person group “judged” each other’s images after studying “Photography and the Art of Seeing” by Freeman Patterson.
The resulting 64 images, eight per member, selected for the exhibit are color and black and white, scenic and abstract, and thoughtfully created with more than a first impression of the subject at hand.
“Photo Keller was founded to help those of us in it become better photographers by sharing information on approach and techniques,” Meyer said. “Personal growth as photographers and artists has always been the hallmark.”
Utilizing the expertise within the group, several persons were assigned to handle various aspects of the show. Anderson, for example, used her graphic expertise to create posters and show invitations that promoted the event. The McCaugheys, Meyer and Dart will physically hang the show and Jobst coordinated the show and contacts with MU.
“Everything about the show, from the images, to the framing and hanging of the show was stretching beyond the obvious,” Jobst said. “It was a natural title for the show.”
There will be an opening reception and talk on Thursday, November 5, 4 p.m. in the Gallery.
