MANSFIELD, PA—Helping Northern Tier elementary school students learn to read, introducing younger students to books by reading to them, and working one-on-one with students who have reading difficulties are the focus of the America Reads Challenge Mansfield University.
Through the federally work-study funded program, MU students work with teachers and reading specialists to tutor and mentor elementary school students in Blossburg, Mansfield, Wellsboro and Troy.
Sarah Bianco, a 2009 MU graduate who is now working towards her Master’s, is the program coordinator. She served as a tutor during her undergraduate days and has seen firsthand the benefits to the elementary school students, especially those who struggle with reading.
“Our tutors help the students to increase their self-confidence and their motivation to read so it becomes a source of lifelong enjoyment,” she said.
Bianco also says the tutors get great satisfaction out of helping others and gain valuable experience too. “It’s really nice to see the tutor’s progress as teachers,’ she said. “As time goes on you can see them becoming more confident in themselves while getting the experience working with children.”
Bianco points out that while the program’s funding has been cut back and there are fewer opportunities to be paid, MU students continue to volunteer their time as tutors.
